Winter Brood Fleet and Roster:

Ship: Rig

Origins: One of the most inspiring events related in every mythology and scripture, though in various ways, is the coming of Rig. Rig is a ray or personification of Heimdal, the solar essence, which descended to unite with the still unfinished humanity, rousing into activity the mind of the unthinking, semiconscious humans-to-be who were in due time to become as we now are.

The awakening of the capacity to reason, the power of self-knowledge and judgment, was the most crucial event in humanity's evolution. It brought our human river of life to the point where deliberate choices could be made, where reasoning supplants instinct, and where the knowledge of good and evil will be a deciding factor in the further development of the species.

The unthinking factions are guided by the built-in monitoring of instinct, which permits only limited freedom, but once the mind becomes active, aware of itself as a separate being, there comes into play a corresponding responsibility and the doer is accountable for everything he does, thinks, feels, and for his responses to the stimuli of the surrounding universe. Each moment brings a choice, and every choice produces an endless stream of consequences, each stemming from its predecessor.

Ship: Tiamat

In Babylonian myths, Tiamat is a huge, bloated female dragon that personifies the saltwater ocean, the water of Chaos. She is also the primordial mother of all that exists, including the gods themselves. Her consort is Apsu, the personification of the freshwater abyss that lies beneath the Earth. From their union, saltwater with freshwater, the first pair of gods were born. They are Lachmu and Lachamu, parents of Ansar and Kisar, grandparents of Anu and Ea.

In the creation epic Enuma Elish, written around 2000 BCE, their descendants started to irritate Tiamat and Apsu so they decided to kill their offspring. Ea discovered their plans and he managed to kill Apsu while the latter was asleep. Tiamat flew into a rage when she learned about Apsu's death and wanted to avenge her husband. She created an army of monstrous creatures, which was to be led by her new consort Kingu, who is also her son. Eventually, Tiamat was defeated by the young god Marduk, who was born in the deep freshwater sea.

Marduk cleaved her body in half, and from the upper half he created the sky and from the lower half he made the earth. From her water came forth the clouds and her tears became the source of the Tigris and the Euphratus. Kingu also perished, and from his blood Marduk created the first humans.

Tiamat is also believed by some to be an ancient name of Earth before it collided with a renegade moon.

Ship: Psyche

"Let Psyche's corpse be clad in mourning weed
And set on rock of yonder hill aloft;
Her husband is no wight of human seed,
But serpent dire and fierce, as may be thought,
Who flies with wings above in starry skies,
And doth subdue each thing with fiery flight.
The Gods themselves and powers that seem so wise
With mighty love be subject to his might.
The rivers black and deadly floods of pain
And darkness eke as thrall to him remain."

Psyche was the youngest, and most beautiful, of three daughters to a King in ancient times. The above was the prophecy read for her by an oracle of Apollo. Her beauty brought many compliments, including a comparison to Aphrodite which brought the ire of that Goddess. This Goddess set her son, Eros, on Psyche to push her into wedlock with the most despicable creature.

But Eros, a God of love who held contempt for law and justice, instead secretly married Psyche, lavishing her with riches and conceiving a child. So began a torrid affair that put Psyche through many trials, some because of the jealousy of her sisters and others because of the continued ire of Aphrodite, which she survives with help from many sources. This goes on until a final trial to Hades, where Eros comes and saves Psyche. Following this they are married by Zeus, which finally pacifies Aphrodite as this means Psyche is now a Goddess, and she finally bears her child, Voluptas.

The Psyche was once, back in times of open war, a ship built for speed. However, now is the age of floating city-carrying barges. So the ship was redesigned to carry additional passengers and cargo in addition to it's former role as gunship. This had the affect of both cutting the maximum speed and crew capacity of the craft, while improving its handling. This had the added benefit of somewhat increasing its firepower when under light load.

Ship: Prometheus

Prometheus was a son of Iapetus by Clymene. He was a brother of Atlas, Menoetius, and Epimetheus. He surpassed all in cunning. He also held no awe for the gods, and he ridiculed Zeus and Zeus's lack of insight yet fought alongside of the gods against the Titans. Prometheus was the creator of man. When he and Epimetheus set out to make creatures to populate the earth under the orders of Zeus, Epimetheus went with quantity and made many creatures, endowing them with many gifts that were alloted to the brothers for that purpose (fur, claws, wings, and fins were some of these gifts). While his brother was making creatures, Prometheus was carefully crafting a creature after the shape of the gods. It was a human. However, Prometheus took so long in crafting his masterpiece that when he was finished, Epimetheus had already used up all the gifts from Zeus. Prometheus was sorry for his creations, and watched as they shivered in the cold winter nights. He decided to steal fire from the gods after Zeus disagreed with his idea of helping the humans. He climbed Olympus and stole fire from the chariot of Helios. He carried the fire back in the stalk of a fennel plant, which burns slowly and so was appropriate for this task. Thus mankind was warm. To appease Zeus, Prometheus told the humans to burn offerings to the gods.
